Privacy Policy
Last updated: 10 September 2026
This policy explains what Ilm o Amal collects, why, and the choices you have. Ilm o Amal is a non-profit platform — we do not sell data, run advertising, or share your information for marketing.
Who we are
Ilm o Amal is a non-profit service that connects students with verified Islamic scholars through live classes, written posts and a free book library. The service is operated by the Ilm o Amal team, who are also the data controller for the purposes of this policy.
Information you give us
Account details: your name, email address and password (stored only as a secure hash). Phone number is optional.
Scholar applications: if you apply to teach, the credentials, qualifications and references you submit.
Content you create: posts, uploaded books, class titles and descriptions, comments, messages to scholars you follow, and class feedback.
Support messages: anything you send us by email.
Information collected automatically
Usage and device data needed to run the service: a session token in a secure cookie or app storage, the approximate time of requests, and — if you opt in — a push-notification token for your device.
Acquisition data: the platform you use (Android, iOS or web), and an approximate location (country, sometimes city) derived from your IP address when you create your account. We store the country, not your IP address, and use it only to understand where our users are.
Diagnostics: if the app crashes or a server request fails, a short technical report (error message, a trimmed stack trace, app version and platform) is recorded so we can fix it. These reports are not used to identify or track you.
We do not use third-party analytics or advertising trackers.
Live classes
Live classes stream audio and video in real time through our own media server. Classes are never recorded or stored. When you join, other participants can see that you are present and, if the host grants it, hear or see you if you choose to speak.
How we use your information
To provide the service: sign you in, show your feed, deliver classes, and let scholars you follow message you.
To keep the platform safe: review scholar applications, act on reports, and prevent abuse.
To send notifications you have asked for (new posts, classes starting, messages, application results).
To diagnose and fix faults.
Legal basis
We process your data to perform our agreement with you (providing the service), to meet our legitimate interest in keeping the platform safe and working, and — for push notifications — on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time in your device settings.
Who we share it with
Other users, only as needed for the service: your name and content are visible to people who can see that content; scholars can see who has registered for their class.
Push delivery: if you enable notifications, your device token and the notification text are sent to Apple Push Notification service and/or Firebase Cloud Messaging so the message can reach your device.
Hosting: our servers, database and media server run on infrastructure we control. We do not transfer your data to advertising networks or data brokers.
Law: we may disclose information if required by a valid legal process.
Where data is stored
Data is stored on servers operated by us. Push-notification providers may process notification data on their own infrastructure, which can be outside your country.
How long we keep it
Account data is kept while your account is active. Diagnostic events are kept for up to 60 days. When you delete your account, your profile, posts, books, classes, comments, messages and feedback are permanently removed; some records may remain briefly in backups before they age out.
Your choices and rights
Access and portability: you can download a copy of your data at any time from Settings → Export my data.
Deletion: you can permanently delete your account from Settings → Delete account.
Notifications: turn push notifications on or off in your device settings.
Corrections: edit your profile in the app, or contact us for anything you cannot change yourself.
Children
Ilm o Amal is intended for learners of Qur'an and Islamic sciences, including children studying with a scholar. If you are below the age of digital consent in your country, please use the service only with the involvement and permission of a parent or guardian. A parent or guardian may contact us to access or delete a child's data.
Security
Passwords are hashed with Argon2id, connections are encrypted with TLS, and sessions use short-lived tokens. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
Changes
We will update this policy as the service evolves and will change the date at the top. Material changes will be announced in the app.
